Two friends are walking up Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon) to raise money for St David’s Hospice Care in memory of a local guitarist who once supported Pink Floyd and Lulu.
Robert Newcombe, 80, passed away in April after a short battle with cancer. He lived in Malpas but was from Griffithstown.
Simon, his son-in-law, made the decision to walk up Wales’ highest mountain a few weeks ago after watching a TV programme about the Gwent-based charity.
Nurses supported the family while they were given 24/7 care to Robert. Simon said the [St David’s]nurses would come and care for him overnight, giving family members a rest.
Simon said: “We reached out for support and they provided nurses to come in at nighttime.
“They were brilliant. It’s just a great cause.”
He’s doing the fundraising event with his friend, Matt, from Cwmbran. The pair both work for Gwent Police.
Llanberis
They set off for Llanberis in North Wales tomorrow (Thursday) and plan to start their walk to the summit early on Friday morning.
Simon told Cwmbran Life: “Back in the 60s, he supported Pink Floyd and Lulu as a lead guitarist. He was quite well known in the local music fraternity.”
After an electric shock at the age of 20, Robert lost a finger on his “fret hand.”
Doctors told him he wouldn’t play guitar again, but he taught himself and went on to enjoy playing music until beyond his 50s
