The 80th anniversary of Victory in Japan was marked in Cwmbran this morning.

A service was held outside the army reserve centre on Ty Coch Way. It was opened by Cllr Rhiannon Bennett, chair of Cwmbran Community Council. Reverend Frieda led the service and prayers.

She invited Nick Thomas-Symonds, Torfaen MP, and Cllr Gaynor James, Torfaen Council’s armed forces champion to do readings. Lynne Neagle, Torfaen MS, was also in attendance, along with members of the public, veterans and their family members, community councillors, and Steve Parker from Piping Hot Cwmbran, who played the bagpipes.

Members of the public were invited to a VJ Day service this evening (Friday 15 August) at 7pm in St Peter’s Church, in Blaenavon.

Cllr Anthony Hunt, Leader of Torfaen Council, said: “VJ Day marks the final chapter of the Second World War and the beginning of peace after years of global conflict.

“As we gather to reflect 80 years on, we honour the courage, resilience and sacrifice of those who served in the Pacific theatre. Their legacy is one of peace, and it is our duty to remember and uphold the values they fought for.

“Everyone is welcome to join the service in Blaenavon to pay tribute to this extraordinary generation.”
