Students from Cwmbran’s Aspris College spent today helping customers at Morrisons pack their bags to raise money for a local food bank project.

The students are studying for a variety of qualifications including access to further education and various employability course.

Amy Holley, one of the college’s tutors, said they all have to complete an enterprise unit.

She said: “It was either we could make something to sell at our Christmas fayre or we could do a charity event. They chose to do an event for Tasty Not Wasty. They are a food bank charity in Llanyrafon (Methodist) Church.

“The money will go to pay towards Christmas hampers. It will go towards families who otherwise wouldn’t have a Christmas dinner and children who wouldn’t have a Christmas present. Tasty Not Wasty help the community.” The money will also help the Christmas Day lunch being run by the community organisation.

Cwmbran Life spoke to Amy during the afternoon bag pack shift. One student was thrilled after a generous customer popped a £20 note in the collection bucket after he packed her bags.

Amy said: “The students are really enjoying it at the moment. They’ve copied really well. It’s a busy place. They’ve all got stuck in, they are all helping each other out which is brilliant. They are having a laugh, having a chat with the community and they’re raising money and having a bit of fun as well.”
