Four years ago Sabrina Cresswell asked a supermarket to donate any leftover bread on Christmas Eve to save it from being wasted.

She turned up in her “little car” and was gobsmacked to find seven trolleys full of donations for her to take away and share with the community. Her car was packed but some crates had to be left behind and this “pained” her.

That led to her setting up Tasty Not Wasty, an organisation based in a hall at Llanyrfaon Methodist Church. Throughout the year, Sabrina and a team of volunteers work hard to reduce food from being wasted. It also runs a community cafe offering low-cost meals.

Many shops are closed on Christmas Day and Boxing Day so they can have a lot of leftover stock on Christmas Eva. Volunteers from Tasty Not Wasty will be ready and waiting outside “six or seven” supermarkets when they close to load up and return to their base in Llanyrafon.

The food will be packed into bags and put back onto the vans and driven out to 15 locations across Torfaen. Food banks have referred people to the service but you can also refer yourself if you want to help reduce food waste.

Then people will come to the vans at each location and collect their bag of food to enjoy over Christmas. Tasty Not Wasty is also filling stockings with chocolates and sweets for families with children.
