Volunteers are making final preparations for the 24-hour Pontypool Relay for Life event.

The event in Pontypool Park has raised over £534,000 since the first one was held in 2016, with all proceeds supporting cancer research in Wales.

The event starts at 11am on Saturday 5 July and ends at 11am on Sunday 6 July 11am.

Participants in teams take turns to walk in loops around the park to raise money for Cancer Research UK.

‘Hope fuels change’

Committee member Victoria Perkins said: “We Relay because every step we take brings us closer to a cure. It’s about remembering those we’ve lost, standing with those still fighting, and believing in a future where cancer no longer takes the ones we love. Relay for Life is built on hope, and hope fuels change.”

Tammy Kinnear, a new team captain this year, said: “I’ve always supported Relay as a spectator, but this year I felt it was time to get more involved. Becoming a team captain has been such a rewarding experience already. I’m walking in honour of loved ones, and to help fund breakthroughs for future generations.”

The event, one of only two of its kind in Wales, invites teams of people to unite in a 24-hour relay to honour those affected by cancer and to raise vital funds for research.

Food and entertainment at Pontypool Relay for Life

Entertainment, food, local stalls, and a lively atmosphere will keep attendees energised throughout the weekend, supported by SW20 Radio and several local performers.

Cancer survivors open the event with the first lap and are invited to a special survivors’ lunch on Saturday. If you’re a survivor, you can register on the Pontypool Relay website.

‘Candle of Hope ceremony’

One of the most powerful moments of the event is the Candle of Hope ceremony, held at around 9.30pm on Saturday. Hundreds of candle bags, each decorated in memory or support of someone affected by cancer, are illuminated around the park, providing a deeply moving tribute and moment of reflection.

Take part in the event

Team registration is free and open to people of all ages and backgrounds. Most teams include 8 to 15 members, and no running is required – just a willingness to walk, support, and raise awareness.
