A disused phone box in Llanyrafon that was reported as stolen shortly after being dismantled has been returned.
The former BT box in Ludlow Close had been left on the floor in sections by contractors who left the site for a short time.
A scrap dealer saw the appeal on Facebook and called Croesyceiliog and Llanyrafon Community Council to say he’d been told they could be taken.
He immediately returned them to the council where they will be refurbished and the box rebuilt at Woodland Road with a defibrillator installed inside it.
‘Unfortunate mistake’
A spokesperson for the community council said: “It was an unfortunate mistake, and thanks to the Facebook post being shared far and wide by our supporters, he saw it and realised they were not scrap. He rang the Clerk to advise he had them and was happy to return them. Thank you again for your continued support which will allow this important project to be continued.
“We will refurbish and re-site the box to house a defibrillator at the Woodland Road Sports & Social Centre in Croesyceiliog for the benefit of local residents and centre users. We would like to thank the scrap merchant for his honesty in coming forward to explain what happened and for returning the panels. We are most grateful.”
