Torfaen Sea Cadets and Royal Marines Cadets are holding an open evening in Cwmbran to encourage young people to join the unit.

The event takes place on Tuesday 17 February at 7pm.

Sian Phillips, the unit’s executive officer, said the evening will be packed with hands‑on activities, including leadership tasks, first aid and a STEM challenge demonstrating how anchors work in sand. Visitors will be placed into small groups and guided around the activities by current cadets.

Cadets regularly travel across the UK for weekend courses and training, gaining new skills and experiences. Sian, who joined at 13 and has now been involved for 11 years, said one of her highlights was completing a sailing instructor course in Caledonia, Scotland.

She added: “Just come on in at 7pm and see what we get up to. I stayed because I loved seeing how new cadets come out of their shell so quickly and get involved in so many different activities.”

Young people can join as junior cadets from age 10, move into Sea Cadets at 12, or join the Royal Marines Cadets from 13. During the summer months, the unit trains at Llandegfedd Lake with sessions both on the water and on land.
