The red BT telephone box in Ludlow Close, Llanyrafon

This disused red phone box in Cwmbran has been stolen while contractors were dismantling it ahead of a planned move to a new site where it was due to house a community defibrillator.

Croesyceiliog and Llanyrafon Community Council said the theft happened on Wednesday 4 February in Ludlow Close. The council had purchased the kiosk from BT and arranged for it to be taken apart, refurbished and reinstated at Woodland Road as part of a heritage project.

Workers removed the cast‑iron sides and door and placed them on the ground, leaving the roof and frame in place while they left briefly to collect tools. When they returned around 15 minutes later, the dismantled cast iron sections had been taken.

Local residents, particularly in Ludlow Close and Beaumaris Drive, are being urged to check CCTV throughout Wednesday afternoon. The community council has said the theft is believed to have involved a silver “Range Rover‑type” vehicle towing a trailer.

‘A lovely heritage project’

A community council spokesperson said: “It is a lovely heritage project which will save the phone box for the benefit of the community and is very well supported. It is such a disappointment that the project has been jeopardised in such a cruel and thoughtless way.”
