The 1st Pontnewydd Scouts are appealing for urgent help after suffering two major setbacks in just a few weeks a burglary in July and now serious water damage caused by heavy rain.
Leaders say burglars targeted their scout hut on Fields Avenue overnight from Monday 13 July to Tuesday 14 July, stealing a “number of items” and wrecking the fire exit door. A fundraiser was launched to help replace equipment and repair the damage.
But the group has now been hit by a second disaster.
Volunteers said the recent downpours have caused significant leaks in the roof, allowing water to get into the building and putting their floor, equipment and activities at risk.
“Our Scout Hall has suffered yet another catastrophic problem caused by the heavy rain, and we are now in a desperate situation,” they said. “We urgently need someone who can repair the roof and stop the water before we lose the floor and potentially face an even bigger repair bill.”
The group supports over 70 young people every week. They are now asking the community, local businesses and tradespeople to step forward.
The Scouts say they would be grateful for any help at all – whether that’s roofing or building work, materials, advice, contacts or simply sharing their appeal so it reaches someone who can assist.
“We aren’t asking for luxury. We just need to keep our building safe, dry and usable for our young people,” they said. “Our young people deserve to have somewhere to call home.”
