Students from Coleg Gwent have helped to brighten up the double subway on St David’s Road in Southville after their artwork designs were chosen for a major improvement project.
Local residents said the route felt unlit and unwelcoming for people walking and cycling.
The students were invited to submit artwork ideas for the two subways, with four designs chosen that celebrate Cwmbran’s character, history and focus on active travel. To turn the students’ concepts into large‑scale murals, local artist Tee2Sugars was brought in to create the final pieces.
The students helped paint the subways themselves during spray‑painting workshops, giving them hands‑on experience with the professional artist.
The project aims to make the route brighter, safer and more appealing for people travelling on foot or by bike, while also showcasing local talent. The subways have already seen upgrades, including new lighting, drainage work and resurfacing.
The improvements are funded through the Welsh Government’s Active Travel programme and form part of a wider set of upgrades planned for the area.
