Swimmer Theodora Taylor set a Welsh record in the 100m freestyle final in the Commonwealth Games this evening but just missed out on a medal.
The Torfaen Dolphin set off in the race at 7.26pm with live commentary on BBC Radio 5 Live and came 4th with a time of 54.00 seconds.
The race was won by Meg Harris, who has won gold medals at the last two Olympics.
BBC Radio 5 Live’s John Hunt said it was “another wonderful swim” by Taylor, who on Saturday raced home in the anchor leg of the mixed 4 x 100m relay team to win Bronze for Wales.
Karen Pickering, former Team GB swimmer and Radio 5 Live presenter, said: “Seventeen-year-old Theodora Taylor, a massive mention to her. A Welsh record, another best time.
“Like Amalie Smith [an English top teenage swimmer], has been having the summer of her life and let’s hope that continues.”
Following yesterday’s heat where Taylor qualified for today’s final, Hunt told radio listeners: “There’s no doubt Karen [Pickering], that Theodora Taylor is catching so many eyes this week for Wales…this Welsh lady has got bags of talent and there’s going to be a chance to show it in [the final].
Pickering said: “Yes, she really is off the back of becoming European junior champion in the individual and the relay just a few weeks ago, wonderful anchor leg of that mixed freestyle team took Wales to the bronze medal.”
