You can tell a lot about a pub when you try to order food a few minutes after the kitchen has closed on a chilly Tuesday night.

The only reason I went to the Blinkin’ Owl in Cwmbran was because I spotted a ‘free pint’ voucher on the fridge that was due to expire today (31 January 2012).

I ordered a free pint of Rev. James and a Heineken (£3.35).

My drinking partner, my father in law, spotted the barmaid collecting up the menus at 8pm just as I was deciding what to order. She kindly shouted to the chef in the kitchen and 15 minutes later I was tucking in to 6oz Welsh beef burger, chips and salad (£4.89).

As a Brains pub the bar serves up the usual beers and currently has a special price of £2.15 on its IPA. A pint of Rev James costs £2.80.

There was a nice mix of ages in the pub. A quiz started in the lounge area at 9pm so we moved to the bar to continue watching the Everton v Manchester City game on Sky. A few twenty-somethings were playing pool while some older drinkers enjoyed the quiz 20 yards away.
