Rhiannon Maving outside her new business Flame'z Kitchen in Llanyrafon

Flame’z Kitchen is a new food business in Cwmbran with a changing daily special board of meals from around the world.

It’s in the same spot as the former Sandwich Club in Llanyrafon Shops and the new owner has kept much of the previous menu but added lots of new twists.

Rhiannon Maving, the owner, told Cwmbran Life: “I’ve been cooking all my life, working for different companies, I worked in Douglas Willis, Rabaiotti’s Café. I worked here for the last three years.”

Rhiannon took over the unit occupied by the Sandwich Club in Llanyrafon Shops, and where she has worked for the last three years.

She said: “It’s just happened really quickly, actually, happened in about three weeks.

‘Va va voomed’ menu

“I’ve pretty much kept the menu the same, but I’ve ‘va va voomed’ it and added sweet potato, jacket potato, tortilla wraps and I’ve done a lot more hot food.

“So every day is going to be a different international day. So Monday is American, Tuesday is African, Wednesday is Italian, Mexican Thursdays and Jamaican Fridays.

“We’ve got curry, chilli, pepper steak on the menu, so it’s all going to be that permanently, but the different countries every day just to mix it up.

“So this week [for Jamaican Friday] we’ve got jerk chicken, next week I’m going to do curried goat, and then the week after we’ll do salt and ackee oxtail stew.

“It’ll be something different because I find it quite boring cooking the same menu every week, so I’ll change up weekly. So this week we had garlic pasta for the Italian, so next week I’ll do lasagne, so just change it every week.”

I asked her what the reaction has been from customers during her first week?

Music

Rhiannon said: “Everyone’s loved it because I’ve got a music license because I love my music as well because I used to do DJing. So I was like, I have to have music in the shop, so the music goes with the themes of the country.

“I just want to incorporate the music and the food together.”

Flame’z Kitchen is open 8am to 3pm, Monday to Friday at 7 Llanyrafon Square, Cwmbran NP44 8HS

🎁 As I left, Rhiannon kindly gave me a taster box of jerk chicken, rice, and a side of coleslaw.
