Young people aged 13-17 can now apply to become a fire cadet. The Torfaen group meet every Tuesday at Cwmbran Fire Station from 6.30pm to 9pm.

Fire cadets can provide you with an insight into working within a uniformed service. As well as an exciting and unique opportunity to develop both personal and social skills by promoting self-discipline, team work and citizenship.

As a cadet you will have the opportunity to learn the basic skills of a firefighter while participating in a wide range of activities in and around your local Fire Cadet Branch. Cadets also have the opportunity to gain recognised qualifications and awards.

Visit the South Wales Fire and Rescue Service website for more information.

What is life like as a fire cadet?

As a fire cadet you will be treated as a young trainee firefighter. You will be provided with your own uniform and fire kit which you will need to take good care of, you will be expected to regularly attend a weekly drill night at your fire cadet branch.

As well as learning many of the skills of a firefighter you will also see the work of other departments within the fire and rescue service and work towards a number of awards while having fun and making new friends. We encourage Fire Cadets to take part in charity events and to support events in the local community. You will be expected to show a certain amount of discipline and commitment, just like a real Firefighter.
