Two sisters from Cwmbran have set up a new food business in the town.

Thea James, 30, and Vicki James, 37, are the owners of The James’s Foodie Shack, just inside the car park for the Big Tile Company on Ty Coch Way.

Thea has two boys aged one and nine. Vicki has two boys aged 11 and 17. The pair wanted to be their own boss to enjoy the flexibility around their family life.

Vicki told Cwmbran Life: “I’ve always worked for other people in cafes and things like that but my kids were a lot younger and it was a lot harder to set up my own business.

“But now my kids are a lot older I’ve been able to take this on without the stresses of having little children. I just wanted to start it up and see how it goes and work for myself instead of other people really.

“I was a bit overwhelmed thinking ‘I’m going to have to do it all on my own’. My sister showed a real interest when I got the place so I just asked her if she wanted to come on board and do it together so it’s half the workload then and half the stress.”

Thea also works part-time in the NHS around running the business. Cwmbran Life asked her what it’s like working with her sister and she joked: “It’s nice, we haven’t argued yet, not yet!

“It’s so nice to be your own boss. It’s like with the kids being off school, if one of us needs to go and take one of our kids somewhere, the other one can watch.”

The shack is open from 8am to 2pm, Monday to Saturday
