A Cwmbran man is taking on the challenge of an ultramarathon once again to raise funds for the Velindre Cancer Centre in Cardiff, in memory of his late father.
Paul Mason, 55, from Henllys, is running the 100-mile Rat Race Castle to Castle Ultra from Bamburgh Castle to Edinburgh Castle in July.
Last year, Paul completed The Wall, a 70-mile ultra course from Carlisle to Newcastle in 14 hours 43 seconds. His efforts raised over £2,000 for Velindre, whose staff provided care for his father as part of his treatment for mesothelioma, an asbestos-related lung cancer, which isn’t curable.
‘Fantastic work at Velindre’
Paul said: “I know at first-hand the fantastic work the staff at Velindre do every day.
“They were brilliant with my dad, who sadly passed away in April after a courageous four-year battle. This ultra challenge is going to be a lot harder this time but I know he’ll be with me every step of the way.”
The cut-off time for the race is 48-hours but Paul is hoping to finish it in just under 24-hours.
Paul added: “Fingers crossed, with the training I’m putting in, sheer determination and some of the strength my dad showed, I will get it done.”
