A new weekly harmonica course at Cwmbran Library has proved so popular it has already sold out, with 27 people signing up to learn “Rock, Blues and Soul Harmonica”.

The Thursday‑morning sessions are taught by Aidan Sheehan, a tutor who is also the current Outreach Programme Officer for Harmonica UK.

Aidan said the group is mixed‑ability and open to anyone who wants to give the instrument a try.

“I have taken a holistic, user-friendly approach as always and I’ve sought to bring everyone together with my mantra of ‘mistakes don’t exist on this course – just have fun trying’ which is working very well.

He describes the harmonica as a small, inexpensive and “rock‑star cool” instrument that can sound fantastic with practice. As well as being heard in the hands of stars like Dylan, Jagger, Shakira, Lennon and Springsteen, Aidan says it’s also great for breathing, mental health, memory and concentration.

Aidan has been teaching harmonica for more than 20 years, including to groups such as older people, those with medical conditions and youth groups.

“There are many benefits to playing this fabulous instrument,” he said. “If any organisations, festivals, clubs or individuals wish me to give a talk, run a class or organise a performance for them, then I’m happy to discuss.”

He currently teaches in Cwmbran, Newport, Bristol and Cardiff, with additional sessions in other areas
