A local family completed the 26-mile Gower Peninsula Mighty Hike to raise money for a charity that helped them through their “darkest days”.

Kady Roberts, from Pontnewydd, and her 21-year-old son Jaydon Notley, along with her sister-in-law Natalie Notley, got up at 3am on Saturday 27 June to drive to Penrice Castle near Swansea for the Macmillan Cancer Support event.

Chris, Natalie’s husband and Kady’s brother, was diagnosed with cancer three years ago.

Natalie said: “I took on the Gower Peninsula Mighty hike to support anyone not only going through cancer but the aftermath of living with cancer. I’ve seen Chris through his darkest days.

“When Chris was diagnosed with cancer and having a young family, Macmillan were amazing with not only us but the support to our little children seeing their daddy poorly.

“The help and advice from them was the help we needed to get through the darkest days. Any money raised is going to be a massive help.”

Kady said she did a 26-mile walk for the charity in the Wye Valley several years ago.

“Macmillan really supported him and his wife and children. I asked my sister-in-law, ‘are you up for this challenge?’ My son wanted to do it as well.”

The trio started the walk at 6.50am. The temperature reached 25°C during the day.

‘Brutal’

“It was absolutely brutal,” said Kady. “The first 14.5 miles were incline walking, steep descents down the side of cliffs and back up. That was really challenging. “

The walk included three miles in “soft sand” with Kady saying it “felt like you weren’t going anywhere. You were battling with the sand. That was hard.

“I cried my eyes out when I finished.”

The route took them through stunning locations along the Gower, including Rhossili Bay and Worm’s Head.

Kady joked: “I think I’m going to be losing my toenail in the next couple of days.”
