Cwmbran’s New Harmony Singers will uphold South Wales’ proud tradition of producing first class choirs, when it takes on seven other choirs at a grand competition in Torquay tomorrow.

But the majority of the choir are keen Wales supporters, and they are determined they won’t miss the big game with England.

But with a big screen organised they will be singing hymns and arias in the bar in the afternoon before returning for the judges’ verdict at the International Riviera Suite in the evening.

With recent successes, including a major choir competition in Bournemouth, where they won the 2010 Operatic and Show Tunes class, the choir’s musical director is quietly optimistic both on and off the pitch. Pam Guy said:

“We are a mixed voices choir and we have always aimed to entertain.

“But we like to think we can compete with the best in our class for quality. The Welsh have a bit of a reputation for showing the English what we can do. Hopefully that will be just what Wales do on the pitch too! ”
