Cwmbran care home staff do 12-hour cyclathon to raise money for residents’ events

Staff at Leadon Court Care Home in Thornhill took part in a 12-hour cyclathon yesterday (Friday).

The four-person team wanted to raise money for the residents’ events. The cash they raised will be used to pay for equipment, entertainment, activities and trips. As the photos show, some residents also took part using a hand-cycling machine.  Pontnewydd Choir came along for the last hour to cheer the team home.

Katherine Bright, from the care home’s activities team, said: “The activities team here at Leadon Court Care Home in Thornhill have completed a 12-hour cyclathon to raise money for our residents’ funds. This will enable us to pay for entertainment, equipment and time out of the home. Throughout the day, our team of four rotated to keep the pedals going non-stop from 7am until 7pm. The theme of the day was to ‘cycle through’ the UK and the food, music and activities on the day followed where we were at the time.

“We aimed to raise around £800 for the event but we have surpassed that by far, with promises of more sponsorships coming through.

“We finished the event by coming home to Wales and were lucky to have been joined by Pontnewydd Male Voice Choir in the last hour, keeping us motivated until the last minute.

“We would like to thank each and every person that sponsored us and joined us on the day to support, donate and even cycle alongside us making it not just a successful fundraiser but a most enjoyable one. We’re still collecting sponsorships so are not revealing the final figures yet so donations are still welcome. But we can safely say we have smashed all expectations and are very proud of ourselves.

“It is no surprise that our home has just been awarded as one of the top 20 care homes in Wales, the top in our area and we’re so happy that we can use this money to improve the services we provide.”
