People living with Parkinson’s in Pontypool and across Gwent are being invited to take part in a new non-contact boxing class designed to improve wellbeing, strength and confidence.

The weekly sessions, run by Age Connects Torfaen, take place every Friday from 11am to 12pm at The Widdershins Centre, East Avenue, Sebastopol, Pontypool (NP4 5AB).

Each class costs £6 per person and is open to all abilities, including those with no previous boxing experience.

Supported by Parkinson’s UK and Boxercise, the initiative offers a fun and friendly way for people with Parkinson’s or similar neurological conditions to stay active. Participants can take part from either a seated or standing position, and carers or relatives are welcome to join in or observe.

The sessions are led by experienced coaches and aim to deliver a range of physical and mental health benefits, including improved balance, coordination, cardiovascular health, and social interaction.

‘Incredibly rewarding’

Brian Taylor, sports development officer at Age Connects Torfaen, said: “Delivering Boxercise sessions for people living with Parkinson’s has been incredibly rewarding. The classes help improve strength, balance, and coordination – but just as importantly, they boost confidence and lift spirits.

“We see participants smiling, laughing, and pushing themselves a little more each week. It’s not just about exercise; it’s about connection, motivation, and proving that Parkinson’s doesn’t define what someone can achieve.”

Anyone interested in joining or finding out more is encouraged to contact Brian Taylor on 01495 769 264 or email [email protected]

Participants should bring a bottle of water and wear comfortable clothes.
