A support group for people living with heart conditions is helping residents stay active and informed – and they’re now hoping to welcome new members and guest speakers.

Dicky Tickers, which meets every Monday from 11am to 12pm at Llanyrafon Social Club, was set up earlier this year and now attracts around 15 people each week. The group offers a friendly, non‑clinical space where people can share experiences, support one another and build lasting friendships.

The initiative grew from work by Torfaen Council’s Health Determinants Research Collaboration (HDRC), which identified high levels of cardiovascular medication prescribing in Llanyrafon and Croesyceiliog. Further research showed that many people felt isolated once they had finished the NHS cardiac rehabilitation programme, with little ongoing peer support available locally.

Working with Aneurin Bevan University Health Board’s cardiac rehabilitation team, Torfaen Council’s Community Capacity Team helped establish the group. Although many members are referred through cardiac rehab or their GP, anyone living with a heart condition – or supporting a family member – is welcome to attend.

Members have created a private WhatsApp group chat to stay in touch, share healthy lifestyle tips, organise gentle walks and enjoy coffee catch‑ups.

Call for guest speakers

Organisers are now hoping to hear from health professionals who could spare 30 to 60 minutes to give an informal talk at one of their sessions. They’re particularly interested in speakers with knowledge of:

  • Medications
  • Wellbeing
  • Exercise
  • Heart‑related conditions
  • Pharmacy services
  • Local wellbeing groups

How to join

The group meets every Monday, 11am to 12 pm, at Llanyrafon Social Club. There’s no need to book – just turn up and say hello.
