After nearly 38 years serving the Thornhill community, pharmacist Shilpa Desai has retired from Shil Pharmacy – a place she describes as “my baby”.

Freshly qualified as a pharmacist and just 26 years old, Shilpa was approached by local GP Dr Ramesh Sharma about opening a pharmacy near his practice. Thornhill had no pharmacy at the time, and residents were so keen to see one built that one patient even started a petition.

Building work on Shil Pharmacy began in May 1988 and five months later, Shilpa opened its doors for the first time

Since then, she has become part of Thornhill. She has supported generations of families, watched children grow up, and seen former residents return to her pharmacy.

“I’ve seen babies grow up and then bring in children of their own. It’s always felt like a community. I know so many families and I’ve loved hearing about what’s happening in their lives. I’ll miss the patients the most.”

Retirement wasn’t an easy decision.“It’s difficult to let it go, but all good things must come to an end,” she said.

Her 92‑year‑old father has recently moved in with her, and she is looking forward to spending more time with him.

She also has a long‑awaited adventure planned: celebrating Diwali in India for the very first time.

Diwali

“I was five when my parents moved to this country and, because of school, university and then opening the pharmacy, I’ve never had the chance to spend Diwali in India. I’m really looking forward to experiencing that this November and visiting friends and family there.”

Reflecting on her career, Shilpa said: “It’s been an eventful journey and I’ve enjoyed every milestone along the way. It’s been a privilege to serve this community. To my customers and patients, thank you for all your support over the years. I’m going to miss each and every one of you, but now feels like the right time for a new chapter.”

Lloyd Hambridge, Divisional Director of Primary Care, Community Services and CHC Primary Care and Community Division, Aneurin Bevan University Health Board, said: “On behalf of Aneurin Bevan University Health Board, I would like to extend our sincere thanks to Shilpa at Shil Pharmacy for her dedicated service and commitment to supporting the health and wellbeing of our communities over many years.

“As you begin your retirement, we wish you every happiness, good health and fulfilment in the years ahead. Your contribution has been greatly valued and will be remembered with gratitude. Enjoy this well-deserved next chapter.”
