Torfaen Dolphin swimmer Dylan Broom was involved in an unusual coincidence at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow – his roommate ended up taking his medal.
He swam in the Men’s 200m Freestyle S14 Final last Saturday and finished third. But judges then disqualified him for “initiating a start early.”
The dramatic decision saw fellow Team Wales swimmer Rhys Darbey moved from fourth into the bronze medal position. The two swimmers were roommates during the Glasgow Games.
Broom told Cwmbran Life he was “gutted” but is already focused on “unfinished business” to get on the podium at the 2030 Commonwealth Games in India.
There were no hard feelings between the two pals when they got back to their room.
“We both played some Minecraft on Xbox after and joked around,” said Broom.
Tom Croke, coach for Team Wales and Torfaen Dolphins, said: “I would add that he swam what would have been a new Welsh record, a bronze medal swim. He will learn from this and come back stronger and more determined.”
