Gareth ‘Yanto’ Evans was given the ‘Harald Thomas, Heart of the Community Award’ at Cwmbran Community Council’s Community Awards evening.
This was read out as he walked up to collect his award in the Parkway Hotel on Friday 6 March.
“Known to many as Yanto, Gareth is the kind of person every community would be lucky to have. Quiet in nature but tireless in his efforts, he is always working behind the scenes to make Cwmbran a better place.
“As a dedicated member of the Eco Warriors of Bran, Gareth helps organise and lead regular litter picks across the town, ensuring volunteers have the equipment and support they need. He also plays a key role in organising community clothes swaps, helping families access essential items while promoting sustainability and reducing waste.
“Beyond this, Gareth is a passionate fundraiser and trustee for the Long COVID Support charity, raising awareness and supporting others through his advocacy and fundraising efforts.
“Despite facing personal health challenges in recent years, Gareth continues to give his time, energy and compassion to others. His commitment to helping people, supporting the environment and strengthening the community truly reflects the spirit of the Heart of the Community Award.
