“The more that we raise, the more that people get the help that they need.”
An under-14s football tournament held in memory of a Torfaen man who passed away in 2022 has raised over £1,000 for Tidy Butt, the local mental health charity.
Teams from Girlings, Panteg, Cwmffrwdoer, Panteg, Llanyrafon, Griffithstown and Sebastopo played in the Ben Taylor Memorial Cup held at Girlings’ ground last Saturday.
Ben played for teams including Panteg and Cwmffrwdoer.

Matthew Creel, from Tidy Butt, said: ““I was genuinely touched when I heard about the Tidy Butt football tournament being held to support us. It’s amazing to see the local community come together like this. A massive thank you to everyone who played, supported, and organised the day. Your kindness and generosity don’t go unnoticed.”
John Sale, one of the event’s organisers, said: “It went really well. You couldn’t ask for it to be any better. This is what grassroots football is about. We’re all close. I think the biggest word for today is ‘memories’.
“The day for Ben is a memory and these kids are going to have memories forever.
“It’s turned out how we wanted it to be, for a good cause, and everyone is enjoying themselves raising money for a great charity.
‘Tidy Butt’
“Like I said, Tidy Butt has been a massive thing for me. There’s people out there who are struggling and four free counselling sessions and delivered within a 14-day turnaround.
“The more that we raise, the more that people get the help that they need.
“Tidy Butt have been amazing to me, you know, Matt, he’s been outstanding.
“They’re always checking-in. There’s things that you can do with them. For something that’s so local, you know we’ve got the big mental health charities, Calm, Mind, 2Wish but you know, we’ve got one on our doorstep that’s as good as any of the others.”
