Two badgers rescued from Cwmbran canal

Two badgers had a lucky escape this morning thanks to pair of eagle-eyed German Shepherd dogs.

The badgers had fallen off a lock on the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal.

Eyewitness Gareth Kirkup said: “The RSPCA were there and maybe mountain rescue.

“I spoke to a dog walker and she said her two German Shepherds went up to the edge of the lock. Their tails were wagging. The dogs had smelt or heard them and that alerted her. One badger had fallen into the water and was ‘doggy paddling’ up and down. There is a metal ladder running down the wall. The other one had fallen in between the ladder and the lock wall and was trapped upside down.

“She rang the RSPCA and they got some specialists in.”

The RSPCA told Gareth the badgers would be taken away for food and a checkover before being released.
