Torfaen has joined a growing list of councils in the UK to ban pets being given away as prizes.

The RSPCA is running a campaign, #NoFunAtTheFair. Its aim is to stop animals, particularly goldfish, being used as prizes. In September the animal charity tweeted that so far 23 councils in England and eight in Wales had put a ban in place.

At this week’s full council meeting, Councillor Alfie Best, Pontnewynydd & Snatchwood Ward, put forward a motion to

ban outright the giving of live animals as prizes, in any form, on Torfaen County Borough Council land.

write to the Welsh Government, urging an outright ban on the giving of live animals as prizes on both public and private land in Wales.

It went to the vote and the majority of councillors voted in favour, to support the motion.
