Sunday lunch in my house usually involves taking turns with my wife to go and pick up a 12 inch Subway BMT. This would not have impressed our visitors from Basildon, another new town like Cwmbran.

We booked a table at the Mount Pleasant on Wesley Street. For many years this was our local pub until we moved house. My in-laws would drive up from Hampshire to visit us but I knew the Abbot Ale there was also an attraction for them.

It has a lot of happy memories for us. The landlord and landlady in those days used to occasionally give us an old fashioned lock-in by drawing the curtains and turning off the lights apart from the bar. The night before my wedding was spent here and I managed to squeeze in an Abbot and a whisky 30 minutes before saying ‘I do’ at the nearby church.

My newborn daughter’s head was wetted there and it was the first pub she visited after we got home from hospital.

Fast forward through all those memories to today. Thankfully real ale is still on the bar along with regular guest beers.

And as these photos show top quality food is now on the menu.

We moved out of Old Cwmbran two years ago but think we are still ‘irregular regulars’ of the Mount Pleasant.
