Network Rail plan to build a new footbridge and lift to make it easier for passengers to use Cwmbran railway station.
A document from Network Rail says that as their proposal comes under ‘permitted development’ it means they are allowed to do the improvements and only need council permission for the ‘siting and appearance’ of the bridge.
It admits that the station, which was built in 1986, doesn’t ‘comply with legislation and rail standards’ as passengers with mobility issues have to make a ‘significant detour’ to travel between platform one and platform two.
Passengers currently have to take a ‘hazardous uneven ramped path along Edlogan Way’ to enjoy ‘step-free’ access between the platforms.
If the work gets approval from the council, several disabled parking spaces in the car park will have to be moved while it’s being built. The current footbridge will remain open until the new crossing and lift are installed.
Other improvements in the plans include new lighting, handrails and CCTV.
