Families have just over one week left to take advantage of free entry to the underground tour at the Big Pit National Coal Museum in Blaenavon, with the offer ending on Tuesday 1 September.
The summer-long deal has been part of ‘Haf o Hwyl‘, a programme of accessible, family‑friendly activities at the Torfaen attraction. The tour takes visitors 300ft underground with an expert guide – many of whom worked in the coal industry themselves.
Under 16s must be accompanied by an adult. All visitors must be above one metre tall to go on the underground tour.
Brian Lewis, Head of Big Pit, said: “Whether you’re a regular visitor or this is your first visit to us, Big Pit is a great day out and has plenty of activities and events taking place this summer for everyone to enjoy.”
He added: “Our world-famous Underground Tour is a big hit with visitors, so we’re delighted to be able to offer free entry for the tour over the summer holidays. School visits are free throughout the year, and we offer several free community weekends too.”
The free period also includes hands‑on creative sessions inspired by mining communities, crafts and games themed around ‘Miners’ Fortnight‘, and appearances from ‘Butty’, Big Pit’s resident selfie‑loving bear.
Heledd Fychan, cabinet minister for culture and sport, said: “Big Pit is one of Wales’ most treasured cultural sites and it is fantastic that even more families and visitors will be able to experience the world-famous Underground Tour this summer, and for free. This supports our priority as a government that everyone in Wales should have access to the arts and our rich cultural heritage.”
Free Underground Tours run until 1 September and are bookable on the day, subject to availability. Those wanting to secure a guaranteed time slot can buy ‘Job‑a‑Knock’ tickets (£8 adults, £7 children).
