A new dementia care service has launched in Cwmbran.

The Rainbow Care Group Monmouthshire run a session every Monday from 10am to 4pm in The White Hut Community Hall.

The sessions are run by Elena Sigheti and Cristina Luca. I attended their launch event on Monday 3 November 2025. The pair had organised a selection of activities for people to try out.

The Rainbow Care Group has been running in England “for over ten years,” but the Monmouthshire group is the first one in Wales.

She said: “The main thing that sets us apart from most of the care providers or dementia groups is the person-centred aspect of things.

“So we focus very much on providing personalised and person-centred care to all of our members.

‘Life story and activity checklist’

“Before people come and join our service we have what we call a ‘life story and activity checklist’ so we try to find out as much as possible about the person, what they like, what they don’t like, what makes them ‘them’, talking points, anything to make them feel comfortable when they come and join us for the day so then that way we can cater the best.

“We’re quite unique in our approach because the people don’t have to fit into the service; we fit around the people that we have.”

They started a weekly session in Llanarth Village Hall in Monmouthshire in September.

The White Hut is their first one in Torfaen.

Elena said: “We’re very excited [about opening in Cwmbran] because we had really amazing feedback from the Cwmbran community, from people and professionals. People here are amazing, and everyone has been so receptive.”

The launch event included a session with musical therapist Rebecca, from Music for Joy.

Elena said: “The idea is, it’s a fun day filled with activities, so people come into our day group, they don’t feel like they’re in care. It just feels like a nice day out.

“It’s not day care like in a centre, like sitting in a chair watching TV.

Split days

“We try to split our days in a way where we do a little bit of something physically stimulating, something mentally stimulating, some reminiscing, and something crafty, every day.

“I know it’s a cliche, but it’s true, there isn’t anything like us anywhere around here. We are very unique in the approach that we have and the way that we deliver care, especially dementia care. We do want to make a difference in how that is delivered.

“We have so many different activities and people just love, getting out of, you know, the ordinary, doing things that they wouldn’t normally.’

The group size is limited to 12. The staff-to-member ratio is one to four.

They provide personal care, medication, and plan to take members on day trips around once a month.
