Free yoga session and canal wildlife walk in Torfaen

Torfaen Council has teamed up with the Canal and Rivers Trust to arrange events to help celebrate the canal.

Twilight yoga and wildlife walks are just a few of the activities that have been taking place alongside the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal in the last couple of months. There is one more chance to join a walk or a yoga session.

Andy Karran from Gwent Wildlife Trust has taken residents on a gentle guided walk alongside talking about the importance of the canal whilst enjoying the signs and sounds.

Andy said: “We walked a lovely stretch of canal with a great bunch of people. Both banks of the canal were chocked full of an impressive diversity of wildflowers and these in turn brought in the butterflies and other insects.”

Kate Holly, who runs the twilight yoga sessions, said: “It has been such a privilege to share the joy of yoga beside the canal in the early evening sunshine…more than ever people are seeking the benefits of being outside, in nature and to combine that with yoga too is a gift.

“The canal has so much to offer and are so easily accessible, providing us an oasis in the midst of our daily lives. Kudos to Torfaen Council and the Canal & River Trust for offering so many great activities to enable people to enjoy them even more!”

Councillor Joanne Gauden, executive Member for regeneration and skills, said: “It’s lovely to hear that the stretch of the canal in Torfaen is being celebrated with the help of The Canal and River Trust. Being outside in the fresh air is beneficial to all, and is wonderful for health and well-being.

“All events are free, so I hope residents take up these fantastic opportunities.”

The events are free for residents due to money from the council’s Covid Recovery Fund.
