Food waste recycling in Torfaen has risen once again, with the council crediting the increase to residents’ support for its Keeping Up with the Joneses campaign.
The council said figures show food waste recycling was six per cent higher in November 2025 compared with the same month in 2024. Over the same period, the amount of rubbish placed in purple‑lidded bins fell by nine per cent.
Since September, the council’s recycling education and enforcement officers have been delivering campaign booklets and speaking with households about how to reduce the amount of general waste being thrown away.
The council’s engagement and enforcement team will continue monitoring purple‑lidded bins and offering advice to households with overflowing bins or extra bags of rubbish. If no improvements are made, residents may receive a warning letter and could ultimately face a £100 Fixed Penalty Notice.
Councillor Sue Morgan, Executive Member for Sustainability and Waste, said: “It’s great to hear from the engagement team that some people who have never recycled food waste before are now giving it a go.
“Food waste has always made up a large portion of purple-lidded bin waste, so we are thrilled to see more of it being put out for recycling.”
