Fishing banned on two sections of canal in Cwmbran

Anglers have been banned from fishing on two stretches of the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal in Cwmbran.

Following recent public consultation, fishing is no longer allowed on the stretch of canal covering Broadweir Road and Star Street in Old Cwmbran because of continuous unlicenced fishing and antisocial behaviour

Councillor Mandy Owen, executive member for the environment, said: “It’s such a shame it has come to this especially for those who fish responsibly. As a council we have a duty of care to safeguard our communities and wildlife.

“Anyone caught fishing or acting in an anti-social manner can now be fined by either the council’s civil enforcement officers or Gwent Police community support officers, due to the current Public Space Protection Order being updated.”
