Thrill‑seekers are being urged to grab a paddle and join one of the most colourful charity events of the year, as St David’s Hospice Care prepares to host its high‑energy Dragon Boat Race Day at Llandegfedd Lake.
The action starts at 9.30am on Saturday 27 June 2026, when teams of 11 (10 paddlers and a drummer) climb into dragon‑headed boats and race 250 metres in a flurry of splashing, shouting and frantic teamwork. No experience is needed. You just need enthusiasm and a willingness to get very, very wet.
Dragon boating is famous for its bright designs, big atmosphere and the way complete beginners can suddenly find themselves paddling in perfect rhythm. Each team gets at least three races, with the quickest crews battling it out in the semis and final.
Entry costs £50 per team, with groups encouraged to raise £1,000 in sponsorship, all supporting St David’s palliative care services for patients and families.
Experienced helms will guide participants through technique and teamwork, and all safety equipment – including buoyancy vests – is provided.
Anyone aged 18+ can take part, or 16+ with parental permission. The event is sponsored by Newport Ford.
