A tiny puppy called Dora the Explorer has become a much‑loved regular at Thistle Court Care Home bringing comfort, cuddles and plenty of smiles to residents.

Dora first visited the home at just eight weeks old, after attending a Christmas event with her owner Abi Phillips. Staff quickly noticed the effect she had on residents.

“Everyone fell in love with her,” Abi said. “Seeing people’s faces light up just melted me, so I spoke with Sarah, the home manager, about making the visits a regular thing.”

Since then, Dora has become part of life at Thistle Court. She wanders from room to room, sitting with residents, accepting hugs and helping spark conversations – often leading people to share stories about their own pets.

“Our visits always make me emotional because everyone loves seeing her,” Abi said. “Dora knows exactly where she’s going when we arrive. She’s so gentle with everyone and loves the cuddles, and of course the extra treats too.”

Dora is currently training to become a therapy dog, and Abi says she already has a natural instinct for supporting people.

“She’s very good at picking up on emotions. If someone is upset or in pain, she’ll sit close to them or lie across their lap. Playful animals can really help shift someone’s mood when they’re feeling low.”
