A Bron Afon tenant from Cwmbran has celebrated her 100th birthday, surrounded by family, friends and members of the local community.

Evelyn Edwards was born in Fleur‑de‑lis, Blackwood, in 1926. During the Second World War, she worked at Picton House in Dulverton for Mrs Herbert.

Her son‑in‑law was the famous author Evelyn Waugh. He was a familiar sight walking the grounds during visits. Later in the war, she returned to Wales to work at the Glascoed munitions factory.

Evelyn married in Bedwellty in September 1946. She and her husband were just months away from celebrating their 65th wedding anniversary when he passed away in 2011.

She is now the proud matriarch of a large family, with four daughters, 11 grandchildren and 18 great‑grandchildren, who surprised her last weekend with a special celebration.

Bron Afon colleagues were also invited to join the festivities at a birthday party held at the Widdershins Centre in Sebastopol.

Catherine Love, Chief Executive of Bron Afon, said: “I was honoured to be invited to join Evelyn’s special birthday celebration and it was a pleasure to present her with flowers from all of us at Bron Afon.

“To see Evelyn blow out the candles on her cake and open her card from the King surrounded by the love of family and friends was such a joy.

“Reaching 100 years of age is an extraordinary lifetime achievement and we wish Evelyn and her family every happiness.”
