Three young boxers from Cwmbran have returned from Portugal with medals after competing in the prestigious Algarve Box Cup -and their club, Torfaen Warriors ABC, was named the third‑best team out of 50 taking part.

Sixteen‑year‑old club captain Shane McIntyre struck gold in the 55kg youth category. Jenzen Miguel‑Powell, 15, also claimed gold in the 57kg junior category, while Jedikiah Jones secured silver in the 60kg junior division.

I visited the Torfaen Warriors gym earlier this week for a coffee and catch‑up with head coach Simon Weaver.

Shane told me: “I won gold. I had three fights in three days and I won versus top kids, one from Ireland, Portugal and Africa. It was a very good trip. It was a good experience.”

Looking ahead, he said: “Train for more box ups now, one in a month, and I think I’ve got one every single month, so I’ve got to keep training hard.”

Shane runs every morning and trains again in the evening, either in the gym or in strength and conditioning sessions.

The trio was supported by their coaching team of Simon, Luke Cashman and Shane McIntyre (senior).

The Welsh Amateur Boxing Association praised the trio’s success on social media, saying: “Da iawn to Torfaen Warriors for showcasing the talent of Welsh Boxing on the international stage.”
