Cwmbran Soroptimists held a public meeting to discuss the safety of women and girls.
Around 70 people attended the event at Greenmeadow Golf Club, which featured presentations from a range of speakers.
Deputy Commissioner of Gwent Police Eleri Thomas opened the evening. Detective Inspector Angela Hodge, from Gwent Police’s Domestic Abuse Safeguarding Team, spoke about Clare’s Law, a scheme that allows police to disclose a person’s history of domestic abuse to potential partners.
Debra Richards and Helen Swain, from Cyfannol Women’s Aid, spoke about their services, which are available 24 hours a day by calling 03300 564456.
Derek Walker, an ambassador for the White Ribbon Campaign, spoke about the group’s work to prevent violence against women and girls by addressing the root causes of the issue.
A spokesperson for the Soroptomists said: “Each speaker considered the topic from different viewpoints. The audience left more informed of both the problems associated with the topic and how people can seek help.”
The event included a question and answer session.
The Cwmbran Soroptomists also donated 75 comfort teddies to Cyfannol, the Sexual Assault Referral Centre (SARC), and the Domestic Abuse Team at the end of the evening.
