Jas, from Llanyrafon, has been friends with Richard for five years.

He said: “I had not planned to enter the event, but when I saw the competition taking place and the prospect of being covered in raw egg, my competitive side took over. The rain and cross winds added a difficult dimension to the competition, but my friend Richard, after a few dubious throws, seemed to get the timing right when throwing to me. I was eggstremely pleased to win the gold medal with Richard.

“As far as I know, I am Cwmbran's only world champion and am very proud to put the town on the map in the highly competitive field of egg throwing! We certainly intend returning in two year's time in the hope of successfully defending the title.”

Richard from Luton said: “We like strange sports. We met through miniature golf and play together on the British Minigolf Association Tour.”

This has seen them play on courses from Birmingham to Margate to Hastings.

“It is a very sociable sport. As well as minigolf we like to choose a crazy 'AN Other' sport each year to try. I was invited to go to the World Alternative Games in Llanwrtyd Wells, famous as the home of bog snorkelling, to run the Finger Jousting Tournament.

“While we were there it was the World Egg Throwing Championships and decided to enter. It was totally unplanned.”

“I don't like getting messy so decided that Jas would be the catcher. I had to throw an egg and he had to catch it. After each successful catch Jas had to step further away until the egg broke. We managed to successfully throw 20 metres which was enough to win.”

From Richard's blog- 'The World Alternative Games Egg Throwing tournament was a truly international affair with 19 teams taking part with players from Wales, England, France, the Republic of Ireland, the Czech Republic and the Netherlands competing!'

“Everyone who entered the games was given a bronze medal. We were given gold medals for winning the egg throwing. In the town's pubs in the evening people were coming up to us for a photo. That was nice.”

Jas also entered with his son Seve and they came second meaning he brought a gold and silver medal back home to Cwmbran.
