A dog has died after being attacked by another dog in Cwmbran.
The nine-year-old Bichon Frise crossed Yorkshire Terrier was being walked by its owner on the lane by Ton Road, Fairwater Shops, that leads to Cwmbran High School, on Monday 1 December at 8.05am
Gwent Police have launched an investigation and questioned the owner of the Lurcher/ Staffordshire Bull Terrier who “grabbed” the small dog.
Cwmbran Life spoke to Marley’s owner- the dog who has been to sleep.
He said: “I picked my dog up. This other dog lunged at us, grabbed the back end of my dog.
“I went down to the floor to try and fight him off, how I got the dog off I don’t know. But then as I got my dog back in the air, this dog then lunged back at us, whether it was for me or my dog I don’t know. And the next thing, I ran off with him, home first and then straight back into the vets.
“They treated him there, until 6.30pm at night, let us have him home, so we had him home in a cage.”
Marley’s wound had a serious infection, and he was back in the vets at 11am on Tuesday.
The owner said: “It was horrendous. Two hours we were there. He nearly died there on the table. So we took him straight to Bristol intensive care.”
He was visibly upset as he described what happened the next day, on Wednesday, saying: “They phoned us up in the morning saying he’s gone downhill again…due to sepsis, blood clot, and then we had to say ta-ra.”
Marley had a dislocated hip and was “too weak for the operation.”
The lane where the attack happened is used by children walking to Cwmbran High School.
Marley’s owner said two pupils, aged “about 11”, saw the incident.
£6,000 vet’s bill
The £6,000 vet’s bill was covered by his insurance, but he still had to pay £1,000 excess from his own pocket.
He said he was sharing his story to encourage dog owners to be vigilant when out in public with their pets and report any incidents to the police.
Gwent Police comment
A Gwent Police spokesperson said: “The owner of the Lurcher/ Staffordshire Bull Terrier was a voluntary attendee and was interviewed under caution for the offence of a dog being dangerously out of control in a public place. She was later released from custody.”
