Foster Wales Torfaen is looking for foster carers to support teenagers.
Helen and Gary, a couple from Cwmbran, have been fostering with Torfaen Council for nearly ten years. They are passionate about challenging the stigma around fostering teens and have welcomed many children into their home, most recently two teenage boys.
Helen said: “Teenagers aren’t all troubled. They’re individuals who need trust, boundaries, and consistency. With a stable home, they thrive. Watching them grow, make better choices, and succeed because they feel safe and supported is amazing.”
The couple began fostering after raising their own children and supporting their grandchildren. They chose to foster teenagers because it suited their lifestyle – with no school runs or nappies – and allowed them to continue working while caring.
‘We love the banter’
Gary said: “We love the banter and humour. Teens might be shy at first, but a joke or two usually breaks the ice. When they start joking back, you know you’re getting somewhere.”
More than half of children living in residential homes or placed with Independent Fostering Agencies (IFAs) are teenagers, often meaning they are housed far from their families and communities. Fostering through the local authority helps keep young people connected to the places and people that matter most.
Helen and Gary have shared their experiences in a blog on the Torfaen Foster Wales website and hope others will consider fostering teens.
Helen added: “If you’re thinking about fostering teens, go for it. They’ll surprise you, keep you laughing, and show you the incredible difference you can make in someone’s life.”
