Cwmbran Celtic Ladies FC are the new South Wales Women’s League Champions and will be heading into the Welsh Premier Women’s League. In the 2014/15 season they will be up against teams that include Cardiff City FC Women and Swansea City Ladies.

Cwmbran were due to play Briton Ferry in a play-off for a spot in the top league but the West Wales team pulled out.

Vicki Randall, team captain, said: “Congratulations to all involved, players, coaches, manager and supporters. After a long hard season the ladies are into the Welsh Premier Women’s League. After only losing one fixture all season their position in this league is thoroughly deserved.

‘We continuously put double figures past teams on a regular basis and this was no easy task. It has required concentration, hard work as a team and determination week on week. Winning one game 26-0 may sound easy but it still required a level of professionalism from all the players and coaches to keep the standard set in September going all season.

“It meant that switching from a 26-0 match to a 2-2 draw kept the team on their toes. We enjoyed a good solid run in the Welsh Cup and only lost out in extra time to Welsh Premier Women’s League side PILCS with a superb team performance and one they should be proud of.

“The league cup was straight forward until rivals Cyncoed surprised us with a 1-0 win in the semi finals. This was a disappointing end to the league cup but with full focus having been on gaining promotion the target was still on.

“Cwmbran like any team suffered injuries, suspension and the loss of players throughout the season. Over holiday weekends we sometimes only had 11 players for a game which pushed the girls but everyone dug deep as a team and came away with the results needed.”

Cwmbran Celtic FC ladies scored 242 goals

“The team scored a massive 242 goals this season in the league and only conceded 12.

“To end the season having only dropped 7 points all year and with a staggering 230 goals better off is superb.

“The new season will see much tougher opponents but with the fine displays against PILCS and Port Talbot and Llanidloes in pre-season this squad of players are more than capable of stamping their mark in the Welsh Premier Women’s League in 2014.”
