A new team of recycling education and enforcement officers has been deployed this month to support households in managing excess waste in purple-lidded bins.
The officers will offer advice and guidance to residents who overfill their bins or leave additional rubbish bags beside them. The initiative forms part of a four-stage process known as ‘Keeping Up with the Joneses’, which combines education with enforcement.
Households found to be repeatedly breaching waste guidelines will first receive a letter, followed by a second warning. Continued non-compliance may result in a Fixed Penalty Notice.
Improve recycling habits
The scheme aims to help residents improve recycling habits in line with Welsh Government targets and broader efforts to combat climate change.
Councillor Sue Morgan, executive member for sustainability and waste, said: “We know many residents want to do the right thing when it comes to recycling, but some people struggle and there may be genuine reasons why some people have extra black bag rubbish.
“By talking directly to residents, our officers will be able to offer support and guidance to help residents reduce their rubbish and recycle more.
“However, residents who continue to present excess waste and don’t recycle, even after advice and letters have been given, will be issued with a fine.”
