A community councillor has raised safety concerns about a new cycling and walking route to Llantarnam Community Primary School.

Members of the public can view proposals today (Thurs 12 Oct) for new planned walking and cycling routes in Oakfield. An exhibition is being held in Llantarnam Community Primary School from 3pm to 7pm. The county council has been awarded funding from the Welsh Government for the project. But at last night’s Cwmbran Community Council meeting of its environment, sustainability and planning committee, a councillor raised concerns about the new proposals.

Cllr Bill Walker, Llantarnam Ward, said he visited the exhibition earlier that day with Cllr Mike Villars, Llantarnam Ward. He said many people were using the new active travel route across the edge of the former comprehensive school playing fields. But he suggested the new proposed route on display to make it easier for cyclists and walkers “from the other direction” towards the school needed more work to make them safer including “double yellow lines” and “bollards”. He felt cars parking on James Prosser Way meant there was a “dangerous corner” for cyclists to get around. Cllr Walker said the school was running cycling proficiency lessons for pupils. But he said the parking situation along the proposed route means cyclists would have to “get their noses out” at junctions to safely see around cars blocking their view. He said they shared their views with officers at the exhibition as “a lot of issues have been raised”.
