Burglars have targeted a church in Cwmbran where a ‘community fridge’ project helps reduce food waste by giving it away to the community.

Tasty Not Wasty CIC (Community Interest Company) is based at Llanyrafon Methodist Church. They’re not a food bank and post on Facebook when they have food to share with the community. Anyone can pop along and take away items. The venue also uses food donations to cook hot meals and sell in its community cafe where residents can buy and sit down to enjoy.

Sabrina Cresswell, director of Tasty Not Wasty CIC, said: “It’s just very upsetting to run a volunteer-led free service, that anyone can come to and have people do this. The only thing visibly taken was food but they have left a huge mess. We are open most mornings and we are available if anyone needs food to open up, so to have this happen is extremely upsetting. Understandably there are desperate people about but we can be contacted at any time to help out.”

It happened sometime overnight and she couldn’t confirm what had been stolen until the police scenes of crime team had attended.

The venue is closed today (Tuesday) and probably tomorrow.
