a sea shanty band perform in a hotel lounge to a crowd of people

A Cwmbran-based sea shanty band has dedicated a song to a local charity whose volunteers rescue people from rivers and estuaries across the area.

James Hunter is a member of Bois y Bryn. He wrote and composed the song in honour of the Severn Area Rescue Association (SARA).

Earlier this year Bois y Bryn organised a weekend sea shanty festival in Newport that raised £2,100 for charity. They chose SARA as one of three charities to benefit from that event and presented them with a cheque for £700 in June

Bois y Bryn performed James’ song, ‘Save Our Souls, in the lounge area of the Parkway Hotel for the first time on Wednesday 19 November 2025.

Peter Box, from the band, said it was timely after the incredible work the volunteers put in last week during the floods in Monmouth and other areas.

“Selfless”

He said: “It just goes to prove that they’re selfless and tireless in the actions that they do.

“They’re funded by charity donations. We know that they want to buy a new motor, they want to buy a new rig next time.

“I call it ‘The SARA Shanty’ but it’s actually named after the distress signal SOS, ‘Save Our Souls’.”

The audience gave a loud round of applause and were encouraged to donate some money to a SARA bucket being taken around the room.
