Hope Methodist Church is marking 160 years in Pontnewydd Village this weekend, and residents are being invited to drop in, explore the chapel’s history and join in the celebrations.
The anniversary began on Friday morning with coffee, cake and old Sunday School songs, where visitors were welcomed by church members keen to share what the building and its community mean to them.
One resident who attended said the morning was “wonderful”, adding that “it was great to be shown around and given a brief history of the building.”
For those who love local history, the church will be open again on Saturday 27 June from 1.30pm to 4pm with a special history display. It features old photos of the church and the village, led by long‑time Pontnewydd resident David James, who has spent years collecting and preserving images of the area.
The celebrations finish on Sunday 28 June, with a special service from 10.30am to 11.30am, led by Rev Cathy Gale, followed by refreshments.
