a fence near a football pitch- a black banner blocks the view for fans stood by the fence
The blackout banner behind a goal at Cwmbran Celtic FC stops 'fans' from watching for free

This made me smile. Cwmbran Celtic FC is run by a dedicated group of volunteers who keep its many teams running.

Like all grassroots sports, funding is a constant challenge – and entry tickets are a vital source of revenue.

A new path was installed across the edge of the Cwmbran Stadium car park , which quickly became a comfortable (and free) viewing spot for some ‘fans’ to stand and lean.

I went to a couple of games last year – entry’s only a fiver for adults – but the club has now installed a blackout banner behind one goal to block the view from that fence.

It’s a neat fix, and a gentle reminder: if you enjoy local sport and make the effort to turn up, the least you can do is pay to go in and help keep it alive.

Pontypool RFC has a similar issue. Nestled in a beautiful public park, it’s easy for passers-by to catch a match without paying. A tree in the corner of the terrace has become a favoured spot for fence-side spectators.
